  • File the following forms with the state of Virginia: 1099-MISC / 1099-NEC and 1099-R.
  • Filing due dates: File the state copy of form 1099 with the Virginia taxation agency by February 28, 2021 (January 31 in some cases).
  • Reporting threshold: If you file 250 or more 1099 forms with Virginia you must file electronically.
  • When filing federal copies of forms 1099 with the IRS from the state of Virginia the mailing address is: Department of the Treasury , Internal Revenue Service Center Austin, TX 73334.
  • When filing state copies of forms 1099 with Virginia department of revenue, the agency contact information is: Virginia Department of Taxation, W-2 Processing, Post Office 1278, Richmond, Virginia 23218-1278.
  • Compliance rules: 1099 data must be in a text file and formatted according to IRS publication 1220 to be submitted electronically through the Virginia DOR Web Upload system. Web Upload supports Form 1099-R and Form 1099-MISC / 1099-NEC. Form 1099-R data and Form 1099-MISC / 1099-NEC data must be submitted in separate text files. Any other forms in the 1099 series should be mailed in on paper along with the Form VA-W. If you participate in the Combined Federal / State Filing Program, you do not need to file the 1099 forms directly with the Virginia Tax Department.

Important Reminder: None-employee compensation (the most important amount reported on information returns) is now part of form 1099-NEC and not 1099-MISC (Box 7). The IRS does not forward 1099-NEC forms to the state, you need to file directly with the Virginia DOR (this applies to both paper and e-Filers).
